SOUND TIGERS BESTED BY DEVILS, 5-2
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Albany Devils Monday afternoon, falling by a score of 5-2. Andrey Pedan and Johan Sundstrom each scored in the first period, but it was the only offense the Sound Tigers could muster in the final game of its Veterans Day Weekend three-in-three. Anders Nilsson got the start for the Sound Tigers and stopped 22 shots.
Albany came out firing on all cylinders, scoring three goals less than 12 minutes into the first period. First, Joe Whitney found himself on the end of the Devils tic-tac-toe passing into the Sound Tigers zone. Rostislav Olesz hit Whitney with a pass as he cut to the far post and the goal gave the Devils a 1-0 lead. Just 2:06 later, Rod Pelley unelashed a wrist shot that beat Nilsson and made it 2-0.
Chris McKelvie scored at 11:18 of the first on a similar play as the one that led to Whitney’s goal. Raman Hrabarenka, who also had the primary assist on Pelley’s goal, found McKelvie driving right up the middle and fed it in front. McKelvie simply tapped it past Nilsson and made it 3-0 Albany.
Scott Pellerin used his timeout following McKelvie’s goal, and later in the period the Sound Tigers scored twice within 59 seconds to climb back into the game. First, a wrist shot from center point by Pedan redirected off of a couple of different skates before finding its way past Devils goaltender Keith Kincaid. On the next shift, Sundstrom slipped into the zone and found Riley Wetmore, who gave it right back to Sundstrom in front for his third goal of the season. That made it 3-2 Devils with two minutes left to play in the first period.
Albany re-extended its lead to two with a goal in the second period from Dan Kelly. Stefan Matteau attempted a wraparound that Nilsson stopped, but Kelly had come down from the point to crash the net. He was there when the puck slipped free and put it past Nilsson to give the Devils a 4-2 lead.
The Devils added a fifth goal in the third period as a loose puck ricocheted to Reid Boucher, whose wrist shot in the slot beat Nilsson high-glove side to make it a 5-2 game.
The Sound Tigers will take on the Springfield Falcons on the road Friday before returning home for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday night against the Hartford Wolfpack.
