The Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Albany Devils in the last game before the holiday break with a 3-2 victory at Webster Bank Arena Sunday. John Persson, Alan Quine and Mike Halmo all scored before Dallas Jackson netted the game-winning goal with less than 1:30 to play in third period. All three goals other than Jackson’s were scored on the power play as the Sound Tigers took advantage of 11 opportunities with the extra man. Kenny Reiter faced just 15 shots for his sixth win of the season.

Jackson’s goal came with the score tied at three late in the third. Scooter Vaughan rushed into the offensive zone but had his shot stopped by Devils goaltender Scott Wedgewood. Wedgewood was knocked out of the play by his defenseman, however, and Jackson had a wide-open net to shoot at from the right point. The slap shot whistled through traffic and in for Jackson’s third goal of the season.

Back in the first period, the Devils opened the scoring on a goal from Harri Pesonen. Pesonen had been serving one of two penalties called on Joe Whitney and sprang free from the penalty box on a partial breakaway. He sent a snap shot past Reiter from the right circle and gave the Devils a 1-0 lead.

The Sound Tigers tied the score in the second period on Persson’s fourth goal of the year. With the Sound Tigers on the power play, Matt Donovan’s shot from center point was deflected in front by Persson and got past Wedgewood to tie the score at one.

Scott Timmins scored on a shorthanded goal for Albany later in the second, but the Sound Tigers tied it again with another power-play marker. Quine took a pass from Andrew Clark at the side of the net before driving to the front and slipping it past Wedgewood to tie the score at two at the 16:55 mark of the second period.

Late in the second, Rod Pelley was given a major penalty for boarding and the Sound Tigers five minutes of power-play time. They capitalized early in the third as Halmo, the player who was sent into the boards, scored his team-leading 12th of the season. Halmo had the puck in the high slot and, with traffic in front, sent it towards the net. Wedgewood had trouble seeing the puck as it went over his shoulder and in for the go-ahead goal.

The Sound Tigers lead lasted into the second half of the third period, but when Mike Hoeffel put away a rebound off a shot by Whitney, the score was tied at three. That set the stage for Jackson’s heroics late in the third.

The Sound Tigers are back on the ice Thursday with a 7 p.m. contest against the Hartford Wolf Pack at Webster Bank Arena.
