Bischoff Leads Sound Tigers to Victory in Debut
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (41-24-3-1), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, scored a goal in every period on Friday and held the league’s best offense to a single tally in a 3-1 victory over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (43-21-4-0) at the PPL Center.
Defenseman Jake Bischoff had a night to remember with a goal and an assist in his professional debut, while Michael Dal Colle and Josh Winquist also found the back of the net. In addition, Eamon McAdam made 20 saves on 21 shots for his first win at the PPL Center, located just 20 miles from his hometown of Perkasie, Penn.
With the victory, the Sound Tigers closed to within one point of the final playoff spot in the Atlantic Division, trailing the fourth-place Hershey Bears by the smallest of margins heading into tomorrow’s head-to-head matchup.
Both teams traded a goal in the opening 20 minutes, but it was a memorable one for Bischoff, who netted his first professional goal less than a period into his debut. With Tyrell Goulbourne in the box serving a roughing minor, Dal Colle and Tanner Fritz teamed up to create a scramble in front. Phantoms’ goaltender Anthony Stolarz went down to make a save and as the puck slid free between the circles, Bischoff walked into a wrist shot and swept it home at the 9:26 mark.
Lehigh Valley bounced back just over two minutes later courtesy of Colin McDonald’s 23rd tally of the season. From the right wing, the former Sound Tiger sped to the circle and ripped a slap shot past McAdam’s glove to even the game at the 11:33 mark.
Dal Colle delivered the game-winning goal at 4:19 of the second period on a brilliant centering feed from Patrick Cullity. Following a shot wide of the left post from Dal Colle, Cullity gathered the puck in the corner, skated towards the trapezoid and filtered a pass to the doorstep, where Dal Colle forced it past Stolarz’s right leg for his 15th tally of the season. Bischoff also earned an assist.
Winquist capped the scoring at 12:05 of the third period when he redirected a Kane Lafranchise shot from the blue line for his 14th goal of the season. Connor Jones also earned a helper.
Bridgeport finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. In addition, the Sound Tigers outshot the Phantoms 37-21, despite playing two skaters down for the majority of the evening. Kellen Jones was given a game misconduct following a first-period fight with Danick Martel for not having his jersey tied down, and Fritz left the game late in the first period with an injury.
Stolarz turned back 34 shots in Lehigh Valley’s setback.
