The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (43-25-3-1), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, led for more than two periods on Friday night, but let a late advantage slip away in a 2-1 setback to the Providence Bruins (42-20-5-4) at Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

Devon Toews scored the Sound Tigers’ only goal at even strength in the first period, and Eamon McAdam (14-5-0) turned back 31 shots in a tough loss, which snapped Bridgeport’s four-game win streak.

In addition, the Sound Tigers lost ground in the Atlantic Division’s playoff race following Hershey’s win at Rochester. Bridgeport continues to hold the fourth position by win percentage, but the Bears are now one point ahead.

BOX SCORE

Both teams recorded nine shots in a fairly even opening frame, but Toews drew first blood at the 7:49 mark with his fifth goal of the season. Bracken Kearns and Andrew Rowe teamed up in the Bruins’ zone to find Toews at the top of the left circle, where the rookie sensation nailed a slap shot through traffic and past a screened Zane McIntyre. For Toews, who was named to the AHL’s All-Rookie Team on Wednesday, it was his first goal since Dec. 14.

Nearly 44 minutes passed by until the game’s next goal, the first of back-to-back tallies for Providence to steal the win from Bridgeport. Peter Mueller made it 1-1 at 11:43 of the third period when he finished a bouncing puck at the right post. Jake DeBrusk created the chance from the left boards by skipping a puck on target that redirected off McAdam and fluttered to the back door for Mueller.

Less than five minutes later, Chris Breen chose the right time for his first goal of the season when he notched the game-winner at the 15:55 mark. After a failed attempt from the slot, Austin Czarnik regained possession in the left corner and slipped a pass to the top of the circle, where Breen fired a one-timer past McAdam for the 2-1 final.

The Sound Tigers pulled McAdam with just over a minute remaining, but they couldn't find the equalizer.

Bridgeport finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. McIntyre (21-4-1) made 24 saves in the Bruins’ win, while Providence led in shots, 33-25.
