Pelech Agrees to Four-Year Deal with Islanders
The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Adam Pelech on a four-year contract.
Pelech, 22, scored 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 44 games last season with the Islanders during his rookie campaign. The Toronto, ON, native added five points (one goal, four assists) in 13 American Hockey League games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
"Adam has proven at a very young age that he's capable of playing an important defensive role on our team," Islanders President and General Manager Garth Snow said. "He will be an important piece of our defensive core moving forward and I'm excited to watch him continue to develop at the NHL level."
The Islanders selected Pelech in the third round (65th overall) of the 2012 National Hockey League Draft. In 53 career NHL games, he's scored 12 points (three goals, nine assists). He's also scored 23 points (three goals, 20 assists) in 105 career AHL games.
Pelech played junior hockey with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, totaling 127 points (20 goals, 107 assists) with 223 penalty minutes in 228 games.
On the international stage, Pelech represented Canada at the 2014 World Junior Championships and the 2012 World Under-18 Junior Championships, winning bronze in 2012. He also won gold with Team Canada-Ontario at the 2011 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge.
