Gaudreau, Langkow Each Score in 2-0 Exhibition Win
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (1-0-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, opened their preseason schedule on Thursday afternoon with a 2-0 victory against the Hartford Wolf Pack (0-1-0-0) at the XL Center.
Kristers Gudlevskis led the way with a 16-save shutout, while Matt Gaudreau and Chris Langkow each scored in the first of two exhibition games. Gudlevskis was solid throughout the contest but especially down the stretch, making several pad saves in the third period and helping kill a late 5-on-3 power play for Hartford.
A slow-starting opening period saw five minors handed out before the 10-minute mark, which provided 5-on-3 opportunities for both sides early on. However, Gudlevskis and Wolf Pack starter Chris Nell kept things scoreless until 12:16 of the first when Gaudreau broke the ice with an unassisted goal at even strength. The rookie forward intercepted a pass in the Sound Tigers' zone, turned on the jets and slipped a low shot under Nell's left pad to make it 1-0.
Langkow doubled Bridgeport's advantage with a power-play tally at 13:05 of the middle frame. With Brenden Kotyk in the box for delay of game, Yale University product Frank DiChiara settled a pass from Jeff Kubiak and stepped to the high slot, where he sent a wrist shot through traffic. Langkow managed to tip the puck from the doorstep past backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev for the 2-0 final. The tally was a welcome-back moment for Langkow, who scored 14 goals with the Sound Tigers from 2012-15.
The game also included a pair of fights, as things turned rough in the second period. Yannick Turcotte and Jack Nevins dropped the gloves at the 4:03 mark, while Mike Cornell and Henrik Samuelsson squared off at 15:07.
Bridgeport finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play and 7-for-7 on the penalty kill. The Sound Tigers also outshot the Wolf Pack 24-16.
