WORCESTER, MA -- Dean Strong and Steven Zalewski scored goals and Alex Stalock made 25 saves to lead the Worcester Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night at the DCU Center. The Sound Tigers fall to 6-5-0-0 with the loss.
Worcester dominated the game offensively for long stretches, out-shooting the Sound Tigers 37-26. Scott Munroe kept Bridgeport in the game with 35 saves on the night.
The Sharks dominated the first period, out-shooting the Sound Tigers 16-4. Worcester finally converted on their chances when Zalewski netted his third goal of the year with 29 seconds remaining in the period. With the Sharks on a 5-on-3 power-play, Danny Giroux sent a pass from left face-off circle to Zalewski along the goal-line and he shot the puck directly into the far corner of the net for the goal.
Worcester held 12-8 advantage in shots in the second period but Munroe was up the task, stopping each one.
The Sound Tigers finally got on the scoreboard with 11:56 remaining in regulation thanks to a power-play goal by Greg Moore. Trevor Smith picked up a loose puck behind the net and fed it to Moore in the slot who one-timed it past Stalock to tie the game. However, just 16 seconds later, Strong provided what would be the game-winning goal. Corey Quirk led a rush up-ice and fed a pass through the crease to Strong who tipped it into the open corner of the net.
Stalock was able to hold off the Sound Tigers in the final minutes, despite heavy pressure from Bridgeport.
The Sound Tigers continue their road trip with a visit to the Portland Pirates Saturday night. Face-off at the Cumberland County Civic Center is set for 7:00 pm.
WELCOME BACK: Micheal Haley returned to the Sound Tigers line-up after missing the last three weeks due to injury. Friday was Haley's first game since October 10.
