PORTLAND, ME -- The American Hockey League held its annual skills competition Monday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The event was held on the eve of the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic. Bridgeport Sound Tigers defenseman Dustin Kohn participated in the fastest skater competition and the breakaway relay. The Canadian All-Stars defeated the Planet USA squad 18-12.
The evening featured seven events. The Canadian team won the puck control relay to take the first two points of the night. In the fastest skater competition, Kohn posted a time of 13.997. Hartford’s Bobby Saguinetti posted a new AHL record time of 13.677 to help the Planet USA All-Stars to the event win.
The Planet USA All-Stars held a 5-3 advantage after the teams split the points in the shooting accuracy contest . Norfolk’s Blair Jones posted an AHL skills competition record in the hardest shot competition, firing a shot in at 100.7 mph. The Canadian All-Star team won all three points in the shooting accuracy competition to take an 8-5 lead in the competition.
The Canadian All-Stars dominated the pass and shoot relay, out-scoring the USA squad 5-2 to take a 13-7 lead. The teams split the breakaway relay, five points apiece. Kohn converted his shootout attempt, slipping a shot through the legs of Worcester Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock.
The 2010 AHL All-Star Classic will be held Tuesday night at 6:00 pm at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
