BRIDGEPORT, Conn - Justin DiBenedetto scored two power play goals and Kevin Poulin earned his first career professional win as the Sound Tigers handed the Portland Pirates their first defeat of the season by a score of 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The win snaps the Sound Tigers three-game losing streak and brings their record to 2-3-0-0. Portland drops to 4-1-0-0 with its first loss of the 2010-11 campaign.
The Sound Tigers jumped onto the scoreboard first via the power play. Following a Travis Turnbull penalty the Sound Tigers held the puck in Portland’s zone, and after a few attempts on rebounds in front, Justin DiBenedetto worked the puck past Enroth for his first goal of the season to put the Sound Tigers on top 1-0 early in the first period.
Late in the opening frame, Micheal Haley received a four minute penalty for roughing as well as a 10 minute misconduct, but goaltender Kevin Poulin came up big for his team. Poulin made seven of his 15 first period saves during that four minute span, and the Sound Tigers had a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Early in the second period the Sound Tigers increased their lead. Matt Martin carried the puck in along the near side boards and made a move into the slot. His initial shot was stopped by Enroth, but Rhett Rakhshani put the rebound home for his second goal in as many games and the Sound Tigers were up 2-0.
With just 1:37 left in the second period, Portland got on the board. Luke Adam spun and fired a shot from the near-side faceoff circle that appeared to surprise Poulin. The puck slid past the Sound Tigers netminder and Adam’s fourth goal of the season made the score 2-1 heading into the final period of play.
DiBenedetto’s second power play goal of the game put the Sound Tigers ahead 3-1. The Mississauga, ON native found a rebound in front of Enroth, held the puck momentarily and flicked it into the far side of the net for his second goal of the game to give the Sound Tigers a two-goal cushion. Jesse Joensuu scored his first goal of the season on an empty-netter in the final minute of the game, and the Sound Tigers came away with a 4-1 victory.
Poulin made 31 saves on Sunday afternoon to earn his first career professional win.
The Sound Tigers return to action next weekend with a New England road trip to Manchester on Friday evening and a Saturday night contest against Portland.
