BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Ryan Russell scored twice and Manny Legace made 23 saves as the Springfield Falcons defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-1 at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night. With the win, Springfield improves to 10-7-0-0. The Sound Tigers fall to 8-7-2-0.
Russell scored the first of his two goals just 3:33 into the first period when he one-timed a shot from the top of the right circle past Kevin Poulin to give Springfield the early 1-0 lead. Russell then extended the Falcons lead to two with 2:31 left in the opening frame when he knocked a rebound past Poulin for his second goal of the game.
The Sound Tigers cut into their 2-0 deficit 4:17 into the second period. Matt Donovan made a nifty play by his own blue line to knock the puck away from a Springfield forward and fed the puck ahead to Tyler McNeely. McNeely entered the Springfield zone on a 2-on-1 and slid the puck into the slot towards Tim Wallace, who deflected it past Legace for his fifth goal of the season to make the score 2-1.
The score stayed that way into the third period when the Sound Tigers had a four minute power play after Alex Giroux was called for high sticking 3:36 into the final frame. However, the Sound Tigers power play could not convert and the Falcons retained the lead. Cam Atkinson knocked a rebound past Poulin with 6:39 left in regulation to give the Falcons a two-goal cushion, and Giroux scored on the empty net with 1:32 remaining to seal a 4-1 victory for Springfield.
Poulin made 23 saves in the loss for the Sound Tigers. David Ullstrom's goal-scoring streak was snapped at seven, and it was the first time in 11 games that a game was not decided by one goal.
