SOUND TIGERS 3, MONARCHS 2
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers rallied back in the third period for a 3-2 victory over the Manchester Monarchs Sunday at Webster Bank Arena. Ryan Strome and Mike Halmo each had a goal and an assist, while Nick Larson scored the game-winner in the third period. Kenny Reiter, who started all three games of the weekend three-in-three, made 29 saves for his third win of the season.
Neither team scored in the first period, though the best chance came on a Monarchs breakaway that Reiter stopped with the left pad. The Sound Tigers were unable to capitalize on four power plays in the first, but outshot Manchester by an 11-8 margin.
Halmo scored the game’s first goal at 7:57 of the second when he collected a loose puck in the left circle. After squaring up to the net, he sent a wrist shot short-side on Monarchs goaltender Jean-Francois Berube and made it a 1-0 Sound Tigers lead.
Later in the period, the Monarchs even the score on an odd-angled shot from A.J. Gale. Gale took a pass from Robert Czarnik down low and tossed it on net. It appeared as though Reiter had made the save, but the puck slipped out of his grasp and over the goal line, tying the score at one.
With the score tied at one heading into the third, Manchester struck first and took a 2-1 lead. Reiter made two phenomenal stops on shots from down low, but nobody was able to clear the rebound away from the crease. Andy Andreoff took the second shot that Reiter stopped before he pounced on his own rebound and scored.
Andreoff’s goal gave the Monarchs a 2-1 lead, but that lasted just more than a minute, as Strome picked up his seventh goal of the season at 4:33 of the third. Anders Lee entered the zone on the right wing for the Sound Tigers and dropped it back to Strome, who was trailing close behind. Strome took the pass and skated to the right circle, then snapped a wrist shot that hit the cross bar and in past Berube to tie the game.
Later, with exactly six minutes left, Larson scored the eventual game-winning goal. Mike Halmo dug the puck out from behind the goal line and sent it in front to Larson. The pass went into his skates, so Larson kicked it to his back hand and found the top corner for the goal that gave the Sound Tigers a 3-2 lead.
The Sound Tigers go on the road for games Wednesday against the Adirondack Phantoms and Friday against the Utica Comets. They return home for a matchup against the Hershey Bears Saturday at 7 p.m.
