The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost to the Harford Wolf Pack Wednesday night by a final score of 4-1. Jesse Root scored his first professional goal in his pro hockey debut, but it was the only Sound Tigers goal on the night. Kevin Poulin started in net and made 20 saves.

The Sound Tigers came away with the lone goal of the first period on the first of Root’s professional career. Scott Mayfield took the puck into the zone on the pass from Aaron Ness and came in down the right wing. He drove to the net and appeared to slip the puck through the pads of Wolf Pack goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris with the help of Root, who drove hard to the net. The play was reviewed, but was eventually ruled a good goal, and gave the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Former Sound Tiger Micheal Haley got the Wolf Pack on the board at 11:20 of the second period. Oscar Lindberg found a loose puck in the circle after his shot was blocked and sent it over to Haley in the slot. Haley blasted a one-timer past Poulin and tied the score at one. It remained a 1-1 tied as the teams took the ice for the third period.

The Wolf Pack came out strong in the final period, however, and broke through for three goals. Early in the third, Hartford threw a puck on net from the corner, which deflected off of Danny Kristo’s stick and up in the air. It found its way past Poulin and in for the goal.

Later in the period, Hartford had the puck in the Sound Tigers zone and Dylan McIlrath got a pass from his defensive partner Danny Syvret. McIlrath was at center point and wound up for a big slap shot that went through traffic and beat Poulin to give Hartford a 3-1 lead. Oscar Lindberg added an empty-net goal late in the third to make it a 4-1 game.

The Sound Tigers return to action Saturday night when they host the S. John’s Ice Caps. They’ll also face the Portland Pirates at Webster Bank Arena Sunday afternoon.
