The New York Islanders opened their 2018 rookie camp at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y. on Friday, marking the unofficial start of the preseason.

Islanders prospects hit the ice for the first time, practicing drills with Isles and Sound Tigers coaching staffs. The 27-man camp includes first-round picks Kieffer Bellows (2016), Michael Dal Colle (2014), Josh Ho-Sang (2014), as well as 2018 picks Noah Dobson (first round), Bode Wilde (second round) and Blade Jenkins (fifth round).

In addition, 14 skaters who played at least one game with the Sound Tigers last season are present in this year's camp, including American Hockey League All-Star defensemen Sebastian Aho and Mitch Vande Sompel. This year's rookie camp roster consists of 578 games of AHL experience overall.

The six-day camp serves as an appetizer for main camp (which begins Friday, Sept. 14) and a chance for the Islanders management to evaluate the young, up-and-coming talent.

“I love it. You get that first-day-of-school feeling and it's great to see everyone again and get back on the ice,” said forward Scott Eansor, who ranked fourth on the Sound Tigers last season with 16 goals in 59 games. “At the same time, it's super competitive because you want to stand out and make an impression on the coaches and management.”

Sound Tigers head coach Brent Thompson added the opportunity for rookies to prove themselves starts now. Mat Barzal should serve as the biggest motivation. The second-year center played his way into the Islanders' lineup as a 19-year-old in 2016-17 before being returned to Seattle, his junior club. Last season, Barzal went on a tear, recording 85 points (22 goals, 63 assists) in 83 games en route to the prestigious Calder Trophy as the National Hockey League's Rookie of the Year.

The rookies will practice for five days before hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at Northwell Health Ice Center for the 2018 rookie game on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Veterans report to camp for physicals on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Packed Promotional Lineup: The Sound Tigers will boast one of their most extensive and wide-ranging promotional schedules ever for the 2018-19 season. Regional hockey fans will be elated for the addition of Hockey Weekend in Connecticut (Feb. 23-24), while other new headliners include Holiday Gift Weekend (Dec. 15-16) and a revamped Teddy Bear Toss (Nov. 23). The promotional lineup kicks off with the home opener on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m., featuring a Sound Tigers backpack giveaway to the first 2,500 kids courtesy of All Electric Construction and Communication. View the full 2017-18 promotional schedule.
