Offense Ignites in 7-3 Win Over Wolf Pack
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (10-7-0-0), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, recorded a season-high seven goals from seven different players on Friday in a 7-3 victory against the Hartford Wolf Pack (7-9-2-1) at Webster Bank Arena. It was Bridgeport's fourth straight win overall and its fourth in five games against the Wolf Pack this season.
In addition, it the first time the Sound Tigers have scored seven goals in a game since Feb. 13, 2016 – also against Hartford by a 7-3 final. Seth Helgeson, Scott Eansor, Ben Holmstrom, Josh Holmstrom, Sebastian Aho, Travis St. Denis and Casey Bailey all found the back of the net in Friday night's win.
Helgeson opened the offensive explosion with his first goal of the season, and first with Bridgeport, at 4:17 of the first period. The fifth-year defenseman settled a pass from John Stevens and wristed a long shot from the left point that sailed through traffic and past the glove of goaltender Alexandar Georgiev.
Just 33 seconds later, Steven Fogarty tied the game at one with a one-time blast from the right circle set up by Ryan Gropp. On a fantastic individual play, Gropp missed a shot but skated around the net to retrieve it and sent a centering pass to Fogarty, who beat Gibson with a quick release at 4:50.
Eansor fired back with an outstanding individual play of his own at 7:07 of the first period to give Bridgeport a 2-1 lead. From the neutral zone, Eansor forced a turnover and skated past the blue line before hammering a rocket from the right wing that went glove side of Georgiev. It was Eansor's eighth goal of the season and first since Oct. 22 against Hartford.
The Sound Tigers added some padding to their lead in the middle frame, beginning at the 2:25 mark when Ben Holmstrom redirected home his fourth goal of the season following a turnaround shot by Mitch Vande Sompel near the right circle. Hartford bounced back to make it 3-2 when Adam Cracknell scored his first of two goals in the period at 6:47. The veteran forward took advantage of miscommunication deep in the Sound Tigers' zone and threw the puck to the crease where it redirected off of a Bridgeport player and in.
Josh Holmstrom collected his first goal of the season at 8:22 of the middle frame to make it 4-2. Helgeson began the scoring chance when he kept the puck in at the right point and forced it deep to Connor Jones. There, Jones slipped a centering pass to the doorstep where Holmstrom guided a one-timer off the post and in. It was the first time both Holmstrom brothers have scored in the same game and the third time they have recorded points in the same contest.
Hartford once again brought the deficit to within one courtesy of Cracknell with less than a minute left in the second period. His second goal of the game came from a tip-in following Vince Pedrie's shot from the left point to make it 4-3 at the 19:03 mark.
Bridgeport finished the game with three unanswered goals in the final period to win the team's 10th contest of the season. Aho started the wave at the 5:44 mark when he created space near the high slot with a highlight-reel deke and released a wrist shot between the circles that beat Georgiev's glove. Less than a minute later, St. Denis gave the Sound Tigers added insurance on a backhanded one-timer that snuck past the glove of Georgiev at 6:26.
Bailey capped the scoring on the power play at 10:51 with a relentless effort at the top of the crease following a scramble in front. With Adam Chapie in the box for hooking, Bailey sought out a skipping puck in the blue paint and forced home his third goal of the season past Georgiev's stick.
The Sound Tigers completed the game 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Bridgeport outshot Hartford 37-21, while Gibson (6-4-0) made 18 saves on 21 shots. It was the sixth win in his last seven starts.
