TIGERS CONTRIBUTE OVER $146,000 TO COMMUNITY
Contributions included thousands of tickets that were donated to various charitable and youth organizations across the region, tens of thousands of dollars through fundraising efforts, as well hosting events for organizations at Webster Bank Arena throughout the year.
“We are proud of our strong relationships throughout the community,” Sound Tigers President Howard Saffan said. “Our success as an organization is driven by partnerships across the region, and our philanthropy this season demonstrates our commitment to the Bridgeport community and beyond.”
The team’s most significant contributions came when unforeseen incidents shook the region. Following the devastation left in Hurricane Sandy’s wake last fall, the Sound Tigers opened their doors to host two games the following weekend, distributing over $250,000 worth of free tickets across the region and witnessed the two largest AHL crowds in Webster Bank Arena history.
The Sound Tigers also proudly honored the Newtown community following the tragic events that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School this past December. In conjunction with the Islanders Children’s Foundation, the team held an online auction of donated jerseys from across the NHL and AHL, resulting in a $20,000 donation to Sandy Hook Promise. The team also honored the 20 children who lost their lives by each wearing one of their names in place of their own on the back of their jersey in their game on Dec. 22, and wore commemorative green ribbons on their jerseys for the remainder of the season.
The organization also collected over 3,000 pounds of non-perishable food donations, including the team’s Goals For Groceries Program sponsored by Citizen’s Bank in conjunction with the Connecticut Food Bank, which were donated to local programs and food pantries including Merton House, Sterling House and Operation Hope.
Webster Bank Arena has also hosted numerous community events throughout the 2012-13 season, including Cancer Care’s Blocks of Love event, the Cox Radio Holiday Toy Drive and the Kings Pantry Holiday Breakfast.
