The Bridgeport Sound Tigers won their second straight game Saturday night, defeating the Norfolk Admirals, 4-3 in a shootout. Mike Halmo had two goals for the second straight game while Justin Johnson scored his first goal as a member of the Sound Tigers. Anders Nilsson made 28 saves en route to his third win of the season.
Nilsson was a perfect 4-for-4 in the shootout, while the Sound Tigers got goals from Ryan Strome and John Persson to earn the victory. When the two teams met on October 6th, the Sound Tigers won in a shootout by an identical 4-3 score. In 65 minutes of play Saturday night, the Sound Tigers outshot the Admirals by a margin of 45-31.
After a scoreless first period, both teams picked up a pair of goals; the Sound Tigers scored 25 seconds apart early in the period while the Admirals markers came 1:09 apart in the latter stages. Halmo’s first of the game came on a deflection on a shot from the left point by Calvin de Haan. Halmo was in the slot when heredirected the puck past Admirals goaltender John Gibson for the first goal of the game. de Haan’s assist is his first point of the season, while the secondary assist went to Ryan Strome, his 11th helper of the season and 14th point.
Less than 30 seconds later, Alan Quine put a wraparound attempt on net that Gibson stopped, but Johnson crashed the net hard and powered home the rebound to give the Sound Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Admirals came back with a pair of goals late in the period, however, to tie the game at two. First, Max Sauve, taking advantage of a loose puck in the slot, beat Anders Nilsson to make it a one-goal game. Just more than a minute later, a two-on-one developed for the Admirals, as John Kurtz skated in with Chris Wagner. From the left circle, Kurtz sent it across to Wagner, whose one-timer tied the score at two.
Dave Steckel gave the Admirals the lead after a skirmish between the benches. The scramble allowed a pass that sprung the veteran all alone into the Sound Tigers zone before he beat Nilsson to give the Admirals the lead. Steckel’s goal came at 11:01 of the third, but Halmo, who now has eight points in his last three games, came through to tie the score.
After taking a pass from Aaron Ness, Halmo gathered the puck in the left circle and ripped a wrist shot past Bobkov to make it a 3-3 game. Neither team scored again in regulation or overtime while the Sound Tigers made it two straight victories with the shootout win.
The Sound Tigers play three games in three games beginning next Saturday in Hershey. They’ll play the Bears before returning home for a 3 p.m. start against the Adirondack Phantoms on Sunday. The team will hit the road once again for a Monday afternoon matinee when they take on the Albany Devils at the Times Union Center.
