Bridgeport, CT -- Trevor Smith had a goal and an assist and scored in the shootout and Mikko Koskinen stopped 32 shots in his professional debut as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers won a shootout, 2-0, to earn a 4-3 win over the Worcester Sharks Friday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Worcester jumped on top first, as Jon McCarthy tipped home a blast from the point off the stick of Dan DaSilva, beating Koskinen at the 8:45 mark of the first period. Mark Katic tied the score with 2:27 to go, ripping a shot past Alex Stalock off a feed from Dustin Kohn. The goal was Katic’s first as a professional. The Sound Tigers took a 2-1 lead into the locker-room after Greg Moore snapped a wrist shot past Stalock with 28 seconds remaining in the frame.
Bridgeport started the second period quickly as Trevor Smith found the back of the net just 48 seconds into the frame. Defenseman Andrew MacDonald fired a shot from the point that Stalock got a piece of, but Smith was standing at the left post to tip home the rebound for a two-goal lead.
The Sharks cut their deficit to one just 18 seconds later as Ryan Vesce picked up a loose puck following a Sound Tiger turnover and backhanded a shot high into the net. Worcester tied the game with 5:24 left in regulation when Brian Mashinter beat Koskinen with a shot from the slot.
After the scoreless overtime session, Koskinen opened the shootout by stopping Vesce’s attempt. Smith then sent the puck through Stalock’s five hole to give the Sound Tigers the early edge. TJ Trevelyan and Greg Moore both were denied in their second round attempts and Koskinen stacked his pads to deny Logan Couture. After Greg Mauldin buried his shot on the left side, Koskinen turned aside Mashinter to clinch the win for the Sound Tigers.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Saturday night when they visit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Face-off is set for 7:00 pm. Bridgeport will be back on home ice on Monday afternoon in a special Columbus Day matinee against the Binghamton Senators at 1:00 pm. For tickets call 203-334-GOAL.
