The Bridgeport Sound Tigers (18-13-4-2), proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, celebrated Military Appreciation Night on Saturday with a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over the Providence Bruins (22-11-3-1) at Webster Bank Arena.

Mitch Vande Sompel and Travis St. Denis each scored in a three-round shootout, and Connor Jones netted his fourth goal of the season in regulation, which helped the Sound Tigers sweep a home-and-home series against the Bruins. Bridgeport is now 5-1-0-0 against Providence this season.

In addition, the Sound Tigers extended their unbeaten streak at home to six games (4-0-1-1) and have now gone past 60 minutes in four of their last six contests. Christopher Gibson backstopped the effort with 27 saves on 28 shots.

BOX SCORE

Following an uneventful first period that saw 13 combined shots, one penalty and no goals, the Sound Tigers broke through at 6:44 of the middle frame when Jones hammered a slap shot past goaltender Zane McIntyre. Josh Ho-Sang created the opportunity with a magnificent stretch pass through traffic that found Jones' stick down the left wing. The fourth-year forward then unleashed a blistering slapper just inside the Bruins' left circle and past the netminder's glove. Patrick Cullity also recorded an assist.

Providence picked up steam as the game carried on and the visitors outshot Bridgeport 9-5 in the second period and 11-6 in the third, but Gibson stood strong in the crease. It appeared as though the Sound Tigers' goaltender would earn his third shutout of the season, but the Bruins responded to even the score with nearly three minutes left. Colby Cave and Zach Sensyshyn teamed up to create a scramble in front of Bridgeport's net before Ryan Fitzgerald nudged a rolling puck past Gibson's right leg at 16:56.

Each team received a power play in overtime, but neither club could end it and the Sound Tigers headed to a shootout for the second consecutive home game. Vande Sompel earned the winner with a low shot past McIntyre on his first professional shootout attempt, while Jordan Szwarz scored the only tally for the Bruins. It was Providence's first shootout loss of the season (5-1).

The Sound Tigers finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, but 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. McIntyre (11-8-3) turned aside 27 chances for the Bruins.

Providence outshot Bridgeport 28-19. It was a season low in shots for the Sound Tigers.
