Nov 13, 2007

Goalie Mike Morrison is in his first season with the Sound Tigers. Morrison grew up in Medford, MA and attended the University of Maine where he posted his best season in 2001-02 when he had a 20-3-4 record. We sat down with Morrison to discuss some of his favorite things and hear his explanations around his new goalie mask.

Question: Name something that people would be surprised to learn about you.

Answer: I love music and know how to play the guitar. A hidden talent of mine is that I can juggle. It helps with my hand-eye coordination when I play goalie.

Q. If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?

A. First I would donate a good portion of it to various charities. Next I would buy my own hockey team and let all of my friends who play the sport play for my team.

Q. Goalies always have crazy superstitions, what are yours?

A. When I arrive to the rink and put my equipment on, everything has to go on from the left to the right.

Q. What has been the best moment of your hockey career thus far?

A. My first NHL game I won against the Colorado Avalanche, 5-2. It was especially nice because I looked up to Patrick Roy as a kid and to beat one of his former teams made it a little more special.

Q. You received a new mask this morning, describe the mask and the meanings behind the design.

maskA. On the right side of the helmet is a big Islanders logo. On my chin is my nickname, "Mo." Covering my left ear is on the top the Nassau Coliseum because that is obviously the goal, to play on the Island. Under the Coliseum is the 33 train. I am a huge Boston Red Sox fan so I put Fenway Park on my mask with a couple of the big buildings in Boston that surround it. On the back, I wanted to keep it plain so I just have the Islander/Sound Tiger colors with "S.W" painted on the back. The initials "S.W" stand for Shawn Walsh who was my coach at the University of Maine, who passed away. He had a tremendous affect on my career so I wanted to honor him by placing his initials on the back of my mask.
