BEARS 6, SOUND TIGERS 3

Nov 17, 2007

For the first time this season, the Hershey Bears were able to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 6-3 at the Giant Center in Hershey, PA. The line of Jay Beagle, Ben Clymer and Quintin Laing for the Bears, hurt the Sound Tigers as each member of the combination had a goal and two assists. Shawn Bates, who is playing with the Sound Tigers for a conditioning stint before he returns to the New York Islanders lineup, contributed on the scoreboard as he scored his first goal of the season.

In the first period, the Bears went on an early power-play. The best opportunity of the man-advantage was by the Sound Tigers, when Bates and Steve Regier came in on a two-on one. Regier fed a back door pass to Bates but Bates was unable to one-time the puck past Hershey net-minder, Daren Machesney. The Sound Tigers were able to take the 1-0 lead just five minutes into the period. Darryl Bootland led the rush into the Bears’ zone and dropped a pass for defenseman, Joe Rullier, as he crashed the net to create a screen in front of Machesney. The Bears’ goaltender made the save on Rullier’s snap shot in the slot but Blake Comeau was waiting for the rebound to Machesney’s right and chipped the puck past the sprawled out Hershey net-minder for his third goal of the season, breaking the scoreless tie. The Bears tied the score at one when Beagle scored his third goal of the season when he took a pass in the right circle from Clymer and wristed a shot past Sound Tigers’ goaltender, Joey MacDonald. Laing contributed with the second assist on the tying goal.

The Sound Tigers did not waste much time reclaiming the lead when Regier scored his seventh goal of the season. Regier received a breakout pass from Ben Walter and cut down the right side of the Hershey zone. Regier, dragging the puck long enough to create the impression that he was going to send a pass to Walter on the far side, quickly turned and snapped a shot over Machesney’s shoulder only 57 seconds into the second period. Jamie Fraser collected the second assist on the goal. At 7:15 of the middle frame, Laing would tie the score at 2-2 for the Bears when he skated around the goal and put a wrap-around past MacDonald. The goal was Laing’s second of the season with Beagle and Clymer picking up the assists on the tally. The trio of Clymer, Beagle and Laing would strike again, just under the half-way mark of the contest. Clymer collected a rebound off of MacDonald’s chest and snapped the puck over his glove to give Hershey their first lead of the game at 3-2. Beagle and Laing had the assists on Clymer’s fourth goal of the season.

Bears’ leading scorer, Chris Bourque, increased his team’s lead to 4-2 over the Sound Tigers with his fifth goal of the season with 12:33 remaining in the third period. Kyle Wilson was able to keep the puck in the Sound Tigers’ zone and Scott Barney grabbed the loose puck at the top of the zone and fed a pas to Bourque who had gotten behind the Sound Tiers’ defense. Bourque deked to his back-hand and then snapped a fore-hand shot over MacDonald’s out-stretched pad. After fanning the two-on-one with Regier in the first, Bates scored his first goal as a Sound Tiger on the power-play at 12:07 making the score 4-3. Frans Nielsen sent a pass to Jeff Tambellini on the point and fired a shot that Machesney stopped but allowed a rebound to trickle out into the high slot where Bates was waiting to snap the puck under Machesney’s right pad to pull the Sound Tigers within one goal. Hershey increased their lead to 5-3 at 14:42 when Josef Boumedienne came out of the penalty box and caught a lead pass from Tyler Sloan. With Sound Tigers’ defenseman, Jamie Fraser on his back, Boumedienne was able to wrist a shot past MacDonald’s glove for his first goal of the season. With only seconds remaining, and the Sound Tigers’ net empty, Bourque deposited his second goal of the game and sixth of the season backhanding a shot from the near boards sealing the Bears’ first victory of the season over the Sound Tigers. Sloan had the lone assist on the goal that gave Hershey the 6-3 win.

Joey MacDonald finished the game with 28 saves on 33 shots and Machesney had 18 saves on 21 Sound Tiger shots to earn the victory. The Sound Tigers went 1-5 on the power-play and 6-6 on the penalty kill while Hershey out-shot the Sound Tigers 34-21.

One After Another: Steve Regier is on a six game point scoring streak. During the six-game span, Regier has compiled five goals and four assists for nine points. In his fourth season with the Sound Tigers, Regier seems to of stepped into a leadership role, consistently pitching in with points.

Tied Record: The Sound Tigers all time record for penalty minutes in a single game is 45 set by longtime tough guy, Eric Godard. Tonight, Sound Tigers’ forward, Kip Brennan tied that record with five roughing penalties a five-minute fighting major and three 10-minute misconducts.

Construction Kohn: Head coach, Jack Capuano, inserted Dustin Kohn, reconstructing his defense pairings for tonight’s game. The addition of Kohn meant that fellow young defenseman, Andrew MacDonald, was scratched for the second time the Sound Tigers have visited the Giant Center.
