Jeff Tambellini scored two goals and added two assists and Sean Bentivoglio's two third period goals proved the difference as the Sound Tigers defeated the Hershey Bears, 5-4. Hershey was down by two late in the third period, but managed to tie the game with two quick goals. However, it was not to be for the Bears tonight as Bentivoglio's second of the game with just under two minutes left in the game proved to be the winner.
Frans Nielsen got the Sound Tigers on the board in the first when he scored at the 5:24 mark of the first period making the score 1-0. Nielson took a pass from Tambellini in the neutral zone and made a toe-drag move around a Hershey defender before roofing a hard wrist-shot past Bears' goaltender Daren Machesney over his glove. The goal was Nielsen's fourth of the season and Tambellini's helper was his team-leading sixteenth. Ben Walter also was given an assist on the goal.
Bridgeport would make it 2-0 when Tambellini put home his fourteenth goal at 14:14 of the opening period. Matthew Spiller fed a breakout pass to Nielsen who cut in on the near boards and made a quick cut move to the slot, wiring a shot on Machesney. The Hershey net-minder made the initial save but fell backwards with the rebound sitting out in front of him. Tambellini crept in for the loose puck and slammed it into the net for the 2-0 lead. The goal was Tambellini's fourth short-handed goal of the season, tying him with Sean Bergenheim for the team record of four.
MacDonald preserved the two-goal advantage when he came up with a big glove save on a Hershey power play. The Bears won the face-off in the offensive zone and kicked the puck back to Chris Bourque playing the point on the power play. Bourque took a slap-shot that was stopped when MacDonald moved to his left and got his glove on the shot nearly eight minutes into the second period.
Jason Morgan got the Bears on the board at 11:57 of the second period when he was able to put a rebound into a wide-open net for his sixth of the season. Bourque, along with Joe Motzko, was credited with the assists on the goal.
The Bears tied the game with just eighteen seconds left in the second period. Hershey defenseman Sami Lepisto snapped a shot on net that was stopped by MacDonald but Kyle Wilson standing in the slot snapped a rebound under MacDonald to tie the score at two. The goal was Wilson's ninth of the season and was assisted by Lepisto and Ben Clymer.
Tambellini would score his second goal of the night 4:38 into the third period on a 5-on-3 power play. Nielsen fed Tambellini a pass just below the right face-off dot and one-timed a shot that cleared Machesney's glove giving the Sound Tigers the 3-2 lead. Walter also picked up an assist on the Sound Tigers' third goal.
The Sound Tigers regained their two-lead when Walter fed Sean Bentivoglio a saucer pass, springing him on a breakaway from center ice. Bentivoglio made one deke and was able to slip the puck in low past the out-stretched skate of Machesney at 9:15. The goal was Bentivoglio's fourth of the season and gave Walter his third assist of the night.
Hershey would pull within a goal when Jamie Hunt put a loose puck in front of the net past MacDonald after Andrew Gordon's shot was deflected into the slot. Gordon and Andrew Joudrey picked up the assists on the goal making the score 4-3.
A minute later, the Bears tied the game at four when Ben Clymer slipped the puck through a crowd and past MacDonald evening the score at 4-4. Joudrey picked up another assist along with Jonathan Paiement.
The game seemed destined for overtime, but Sean Bentivoglio would send the crowd into a frenzy when he scored 18 seconds later. Tambellini sent a breakout pass to Bentivoglio who tapped the puck to control it on the blue-line, used his speed to shield the Hershey defender, cut across the crease and roofed a shot over Machesney winning the game for the Sound Tigers by the score of 5-4. Spiller added his second assist of the game on the goal.
Joey MacDonald finished the night with 28 saves on 32 shots, while Hershey's Machesney stopped 24 of the 29 shots. The Sound Tigers were 2-6 on the power-play and 7-7 on the penalty kill with Tambellini scoring another short-handed goal.
The Sound Tigers take to the ice next on Friday as they welcome the Providence Bruins at 7:30 and Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Hartfod Wolf Pack come to Bridgeport.
