SENATORS 3, SOUND TIGERS 1

Matt Keith scored his first goal as a Sound Tiger in a 3-1 loss to the Binghamton Senators Sunday afternoon at Arena at Harbor Yard.

The Senators got on the board first at 3:36 of the second period. Lawrence Nycholat beat MacDonald on a wrist shot from the left point on the power-play for the 1-0 lead. Traffic in front of the Sound Tigers' net-minder prevented MacDonald from seeing the puck clearly as it came in on net. Greg Mauldin and Josh Hennessy picked up the assists on the goal.

Hockey BuddiesBoth goaltenders kept the teams off the board in the second period. MacDonald's best save of the second period came when Senators' forward Nick Foligno took a slap shot from the top of the left circle that MacDonald slid from post-to-post and snatched out of the air.

Four minutes into the third, MacDonald received some help from Sean Bentivoglio when the forward cleared a loose puck in the crease that had slipped under MacDonald after he made the first save on a Senator shot. Bentivoglio swept the puck from danger just before a charging Senator forward was able to poke it in the open net.

About thirty seconds later the Tigers would finally get the equalizer on Keith's wrap-around goal. The 6'2, 200 pound forward used his size to out-muscle a defenseman down low and back-handed the puck between the pads of Senator goalie Brain Elliot. It was Keith's sixth goal of the season and first since his trade to the Sound Tigers on Wednesday. Ben Walter added his 20th helper of the season.

Binghamton's Derek Smith made it 2-1 with 8:11 left in regulation. Smith skated over the blue-line and down the left side before putting a slap-shot past the glove of MacDonald for a 2-1 lead, which the Senators would not relinquish.

Shawn Weller added an empty-net goal for the Senators with 40 seconds left to seal the victory for Binghamton. MacDonald had 21 saves in the game, while Elliot stopped 24 of the 25 Sound Tiger shots he faced.

The Sound Tigers return to action Wednesday night when they travel to Norfolk to take on the Admirals at 7:15 p.m.

Face-offGame Operations: Today was Armed Forces Day at the Arena at Harbor Yard as the Sound Tigers paid tribute to the US troops protecting our nation around the world. The game was preceded by a moment of silence, the presentation of colors and a ceremonial puck drop by Erin Desjardin. Also, the names of the Connecticut troops and civilians who have lost their lives in combat since 2001 were read during a pre-game ceremony. The Sound Tigers wore commemorative camouflage jerseys in honor of the day, which were purchased in game auctions and raffles throughout the game.

School's Out:
Four youth hockey teams took part in this afternoon's game. The Greater New Haven Warriors lined up along side the Sound Tigers on the ice for the national anthem, while the Greater Bridgeport Junior Hockey Association and Wonderland Wizards played inter-squad games during the intermissions.
