Jan 29, 2008
It took Jeff Tambellini nearly 135 minutes to pick up his first point in an All-Star game but he got it with about five minutes remaining in the third period to tie the game at eight and send the game into a shootout where the Canadian AHL All-Stars won the game 9-8.
Tambellini, the league's leading goal scorer with 26 tallies, was paired with Norfolk Admiral Justin Keller and San Antonio Rampage forward Joey Tenute for most of the game.
With the game tied, Rob Schremp shot first for Planet USA in the shootout and scored an incredible goal. Schremp picked the puck up on his stick and carried it into the zone as if the puck was a lacrosse ball. The Edmonton Oilers top prospect, usually finishes this move by throwing it past the opposing goalie, put the puck back on the ice and chipped the puck over the pad of Drew MacIntyre to grab the early 1-0 lead in the shootout.
The biggest cheers of the night came whenever home-town hero, Denis Hamel touched the puck and when he scored the first goal on the Canadian team's first attempt, the crowd went wild giving their team captain a standing ovation.
Planet USA would send four more shooters on MacIntyre but he would turn each of the attempts aside. The night belonged to rookie sensation, Teddy Purcell who is part the Los Angeles Kings organization and has played 41 games for the Manchester Monarchs piling up 15 goals and 39 assists for a total of 54 points, one more than Tambellini. Purcell recorded a hat-trick and scored the game winning goal in the shootout on the Canadian All-Stars third attempt, earning game MVP honors.
Tambellini will head home to join the Sound Tigers for practice before the team travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to take on the Penguins at 7:05 p.m. for only the second time this season. Saturday, the Sound Tigers will face-off against their Connecticut rivals, the Hartford Wolf Pack, game-time is 7 p.m.
