Watch Highlights

After trailing 3-2 entering the third period, the Sound Tigers rattled off two goals in the final period of regulation to complete their come from behind 4-3 victory over the Norfolk Admirals. Matt Keith scored two goals, with his second turning out as the game-winner to extend the Sound Tigers unbeaten streak to five games.

Bourne breakawayThe Admirals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when Justin Keller scored his tenth goal of the season on a quick snap shot over the shoulder of Sound Tigers’ starting goalie, Mike Morrison. Mario Scalzo and Bracken Kearns collected assists on the goal, coming 1:42 into the opening frame. The Sound Tigers would answer with about three minutes left in the period, when Keith recorded his first tally of the game, to tie the contest at one. Jason Pitton made a great play below the blue-line and feathered a pass through the crease that Keith was able to slam past Norfolk starting goalie, Marc Denis for his eighth goal this season. Jeremy Colliton collected the second assist on the tying goal.

It only took 31 seconds into the middle frame for the Admirals to regain their one goal advantage. Radek Smolenak scored his fifth of the season on assists from Paul Szczechura and Junior Lessard for the 2-1 lead. Tim Jackman tied the score 1:10 later when he picked up a turnover at the Norfolk blue-line and snapped a shot through the legs of Denis. Keith had the lone assist on the Sound Tigers’ second goal of the game. The Admirals would take a 3-2 lead into the third period when Kearns back-handed his third goal of the season through Morrison’s legs. David Schneider and Keller had the helpers on Kearns’ marker at 10:57.

Matt KeithIn the third, The Sound Tigers went on the power-play almost four minutes in when Trevor Smith drew a boarding penalty against Norm Milley. Exactly one minute later, Kyle Okposo would tie the score at four. Sean Bentivoglio slowed the play down at the right post and saucered a pass to Jamie Fraser at the point. Fraser faked a shot and walked around a Norfolk forward attempting to block the shot and then fired a wrist shot towards Denis. The Admiral goaltender made the initial save but the rebound bounced to Okposo at the far point where he pounced on the loose puck, for his seventh goal of the season. Keith would complete the comeback at the 8:30 mark. Justin Bourne fed a pass to Keith in the slot where he snapped the puck on net but it redirected off a defenseman. The puck fluttered over the pad of Denis, claiming the 4-3 lead for the Sound Tigers that they would not relinquish. Trevor Smith had the second assist on game-winning goal.

Morrison made 28 saves on the 31 shots he faced while Denis stopped 21 of 25 shots. The Sound Tigers extended their power-play goal streak to seven games, going 1-for-4 on the man-advantage and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill.

The Sound Tigers will hit the road for the next two games. On Friday they will travel to Albany to take on the River Rats at 7 p.m. and then visit the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday at 7 p.m. before returning home Sunday for the River Rats at 4 p.m.

3 Stars

1. Matt Keith – Best all around game he has played since his trade to the Sound Tigers earlier this season (2 goals and an assist)
2. Kyle Okposo – Game-tying goal in the third period
3. Justin Keller – Scored a goal and an assist
Honorable Mention: Steve Regier – May not have shown up on the point column tonight, but showed a lot of character, standing up for his teammate, Trevor Smith, when he took a back hit from behind. The incident sparked his team to the comeback victory.

Game Operations: The Sound Tigers hosted their second annual career fair before the game with team representatives coming from the New York Islanders, New York Mets and a couple of local colleges. During the first intermission, a game of musical chairs was played while in the second the game ops crew dressed a few fans in hockey attire.

Non-Stop…Flip-Flop: Sound Tigers head coach, Jack Capuano, has gone with an unorthodox style to playing his goaltenders. The team is on a five game winning streak and Capuano has chosen to change his net-minders each night. The way Joey MacDonald and Mike Morrison are playing, the Sound Tigers look to make a strong push for the playoffs.

Streaking: The team has two streaks going right now, a power-play goal streak and a winning streak. The Sound Tigers have scored a goal on the man-advantage in the last seven games and are currently riding a five game winning streak.
