Watch Highlights

The Sound Tigers perfect record in the shootout was snapped tonight by the Albany River Rats. Bryan Rodney fired a shot past Sound Tigers’ starting goalie, Mike Morrison’s blocker, the only attempt that eluded him. Albany starting goaltender, Michael Leighton, turned aside all five shots he saw in the shootout to lead the River Rats to a 2-1 victory. Jeff Tambellini scored the only goal for the Sound Tigers in the third period to tie the score at one. The goal put him in a two-way tie with Chicago Wolves’ forward, Brett Sterling for the league lead with 29.

Morrison saveAlbany jumped on the board first when Mark Flood scored his tenth goal of the season with less than two minutes to play in the first period while the River Rats were on the power-play. Steve Ward and Jamie Johnson had the assists on the opening goal of the game.

Both goalies would keep their teams in the game in the second period. Morrison fended off all 12 shots he faced while Leighton had nine saves.

In the third period, with the Sound Tigers on the man-advantage, Tambellini would even the score at one. Steve Regier sent a pass to Trevor Smith at the bottom of the right circle where Smith quickly turned a snapped a pass over to Tambellini at the far post. The league’s leading goal scorer, controlled the puck and wristed it behind Leighton to tie the score at 9:12 of the final frame.

Neither team was able to score the rest of the way through regulation time. In overtime, both net-minders turned aside three shots apiece, sending the game to a shootout where the Sound Tigers were 7-0 coming in. The game was headed for the shootout where the Sound Tigers were 7-0 before tonight’s match-up.

Rodney, who attended the Sound Tigers’ training camp last season, was the only player to tally a goal when he took a wide path to his right, then quickly snapped a shot past Morrison, to claim the 2-1 victory for the River Rats.

Tambellini goalBoth net-minders finished with a total of 26 saves, keeping their respective teams in the game long enough for each team to collect a point. The Sound Tigers finished 1-for-5 on the power-play and went 5-for-6 on the penalty-kill.

The Sound Tigers will return to action Friday when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, the Sound Tigers will return home to face-off against the Binghamton Senators on Country Night, starting at 7 p.m. The team will pack the bus and travel to Lowell, MA on Sunday for a 4 p.m. contest against the Devils.
