(June 18, 2007) Sean Bergenheim is returning to the Islanders after agreeing to terms on Monday on a one-year contract. The 5-11, 200-pound left wing was selected in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2002 NHL Draft and is one of the Islanders' top prospects.

"Sean's speed, skill and tenacity make him a perfect fit for the team we're putting together," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "We're looking forward to him being an important player for us this season and for years to come. We also know Sean is a player that our fans have come to love because of his work ethic and passion for the game."

The 23-year old Bergenheim played 28 games for the Islanders in 2005-06, scoring 4 goals and adding 5 assists. Those 9 points were all scored in the final 19 games of the season. In 55 games in 05-06 with Bridgeport (AHL), the native of Finland was 25-22-47.

"I'm very happy and proud to be an Islander again," Bergenheim said this morning from Finland. "A lot of people have told me my play should fit in with this year's team, but Ted Nolan doesn't know me yet. My goal is to show him I'm a Ted Nolan-type player. I can't wait to get back to Long Island."

Bergenheim played last season in Europe: 9 games with Yaroslavl in Russia before joining the Swedish Elite League. In 36 games with Frolunda of the SEL, Bergenheim was 16-17-33. Bergenheim has also represented Finland in two World Championships, two World Junior Championships and two Under-18 Championships.
