Islanders Camp OT winWatch the highlights on Sound TigersTV

The youth movement the New York Islanders have decided to go towards paid dividends tonight at the Moncton Coliseum as Trevor Smith scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Islanders a 2-1 victory. Yann Danis played the second half of tonight’s game and stopped all 14 shots he faced to earn the victory.

Boston jumped on the power-play about seven minutes into the first period and had two great scoring chances. Former Islander, Petteri Nokelainen fired two shots from below the circles but Islanders’ starter and former Sound Tiger, Joey MacDonald was able to smother for face-offs. Kyle Okposo had the best scoring chance for the Islanders’ while the team was shorthanded later in the period. Bruins’ defenseman Matt Hunwick turned the puck over in the neutral zone where Okposo picked it up and snapped a shot that was stopped by Boston net-minder, Tuuka Rask, who played last year in Providence.

In the second period, the Bruins broke the scoreless tie at 8:01 when Dennis Wideman wristed a shot from the point that went past MacDonald’s left pad and into the back of the net. Hunwick and Martins Karsums had the assists on the tally. The Islanders would answer right back about a minute later while on the man-advantage. Jon Sim walked out from the left corner and attempted a centering pass to Doug Weight at the back post. As Sin sent the puck across, it deflected off of a skate and found its way past Rask, tying the game at one. Okposo and Chris Campoli assisted on Sim’s first goal of the preseason.

Danis split the game with MacDonald and entered the game at the half-way point of the game. In the third period, Danis and Rask kept the game dead-locked at 1-1 going into overtime.

In the extra session, with three minutes remaining, the Islanders capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone. Mike Iggulden picked up the puck and sent a pass to Smith streaking into the Boston zone. Smith used his speed to walk a defenseman and back-handed a shot over the blocker of Rask to win the game 2-1.

Danis finished the game with 14 saves coming in after MacDonald played the first half of the game stopping seven of the eight shots he faced. Rask finished the game with 26 saves on 28 shots. The Islanders finished 1-for-7 on the power-play and went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The Islanders will continue their Training Camp in Moncton tomorrow with practices resuming at 9 a.m. Tomorrow night, the rookies will play their second game of the preseason against the University of New Brunswick.

3 Stars

1. Trevor Smith – Game-winning goal in overtime on a terrific individual effort
2. Yann Danis – 14 saves playing half of the game
3. Jon Sim – 1 goal
Honorable Mention: Kurtis McLean – Threw numerous hits and took a big open ice check at center ice but returned to play the rest of the game

Kid Line: A lot of the players who were suited up for tonight’s contest against the Bruins have been here before but the line of Trevor Smith, Kurtis McLean and Mike Iggulden have one NHL contest between the three of them. Iggulden played a game last season while in the San Jose Sharks organization against the Islanders.

Nokie’s Back:
Last summer the Islanders took on the Bruins during their preseason schedule in St. John’s, NS and Petteri Nokelainen was in the lineup. Tonight he was back again but this time wearing number 29 after playing all of last season with Boston wearing the number 56 on his back.

PP Time: Tonight it was everyone playing everywhere and the young defensemen Jack Hillen and Chris Lee were quarterbacking the man-advantage several times. One of the Islanders best chances was when Doug Weight found Lee at the back-door but only a sprawling pad save by Tuuka Rask kept the puck from going in. Mike Iggulden has also seen time on the power-play as he’s been stationed in front of Rask creating a screen.
