It wasn’t a fun day for the goalies at the Islanders’ Blue and White scrimmage at the Credit Union Place in Summerside, P.E.I. tonight as they combined for a total of 20 goals against in Team White’s 11-9 victory over Team Blue. Matt Martin, selected in the fifth round of this summer’s NHL Entry Draft, scored three goals in the win.

The Blue Team opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game when Jason Pitton scored off a one-time pass from Mark Streit. Streit walked in over the blue-line and found Pitton cutting through the crease, one-timing the puck past Team White starting goalie Peter Mannino for the 1-0 lead. Team White wasted not time in evening the score as Kurtis McLean tapped in a rebound under Team Blue net-minder, Kevin Poulin just 38 seconds later. At 13:08, Team Blue regained the one goal lead when Jared Spurgeon snapped a wrist shot through Mannino. Spurgeon, normally a defenseman, was partnered with Mitch Fritz and Tyler Haskins up front. All three contributed on the tally making the score 2-1. Team White winger, Matt Martin would tie the game at two with seven minutes to play in the opening frame. Andrew MacDonald fed a pass to Rob Hennigar in the left face-off circle where he snapped a shot towards the net, but the puck redirected off a shin pad right to Martin who was able to jam it past Poulin. Joel Rechlicz would grab Team White’s first lead of the contest when he came in along the left wing boards and snapped a shot over Poulin’s glove. Hennigar assisted on the play closing out the first period scoring at 3-2 in favor of Team White.

Martin would make it 4-2 in favor of Team White when he tapped a Simon Lacroix feed past Poulin at 3:08 of the second period. McLean had the second assist on the goal. Brendan Witt would take a shift at forward and it paid off when he snapped a shot over Poulin’s glove at the six-minute mark of the middle frame. Hennigar and Martin assisted on Witt’s goal making it 5-2 Team White. Team Blue would answer, tying the score with three quick goals of their own from Justin DiBenedetto, Jon Sim and Tyler Haskins to knot the score at 5-5. Witt would tally his second goal of the game with just under three minutes to play in the second, wristing a shot over Poulin for the 6-5 lead for Team White. DiBenedetto tied the scored with less than a minute to play with his second goal of the game making the score 6-6 heading into the third period.

Nathan Lawson replaced Mannino at the start of the third period but the wide-open play of the scrimmage made it difficult for him as well to stop pucks. Streit made the score 7-6 Team Blue on a goal where he skated into the white zone and slid a shot through the legs of Lawson. Max Gratchev tied the game at 7-7 minutes later when he came in on a 2-on-1 and put a shot on Poulin that he stopped, but the rebound came right out to him where he pulled it around the net-minder and put the puck in the back of the net. Martin would complete his hat-trick a just over two minutes later with Gratchev having the lone assist making the score 8-7 in favor of Team White. Chris Lee would make the score 9-7 and Vladimir Nikiforov would get the game-winner about four minutes later. Team Blue would tack on two tallies to make it interesting but Team White rattled off one last goal to seal the victory.

The Islanders will return to their home Training Camp site in Moncton, NB tonight to have one final day of on-ice practice before returning to P.E.I. for the final game of their exhibition schedule in the Maritimes. After Saturday’s game, against the Florida Panthers, the Islanders will fly back to Long Island.

3 Stars

1. Matt Martin – Scored a hat-trick and had 2 assists
2. Rob Hennigar – Had five assists in the game
3. Brendan Witt – The stay-at-home defenseman showed his offensive abilities with two tallies
Honorable Mention: The goaltenders deserve this nod as they stopped numerous 2-on-1 and even 3-on-1 breaks. The score may have been high but the goalies did everything they could to keep the game close.

Police: When the team arrived by bus this afternoon, there was a police escort waiting. The escort took the bus through the center of town and as people saw the bus they stopped to wave or honk their horns. Tonight’s game had over two thousand people in attendance.

Preview of the Venue: If you are one of the lucky fans who travel up to Summerside, P.E.I. to watch the Sound Tigers take on the Binghamton Senators in November, you will be blown away by the Credit Union Place the community has. The building sits about 3,500 people with extra room for standing. The complex also has a weight room, practice rink and aquatic center.

Behind the Bench: Sound Tigers’ coaching staff, Jack Capuano and Pat Bingham, were the coaches for Team Blue. Team White was led by Islander scouts Chris O’Sullivan and Eric Cairns.

Faceoff Win: Brendan Witt and Jon Sim were the assistant captains for tonight’s game and took part in a ceremonial puck drop prior to the start of the game. Witt and Sim posed for pictures and then Witt aggressively lifted Sim’s stick and won the draw.
