ISLANDERS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 7

Sep 26, 2008

Mannino MaskThe Islanders’ who took part in the Blue vs. White scrimmage in Prince Edward Island returned to Moncton, NB last night at midnight while Islanders’ head coach, Scott Gordon and the rest of the team returned from London, ON at 3 a.m. after their exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers, so today’s day at the rink was optional. Some of the players did a light workout on the bike or received treatment from the training staff while others skated in a morning optional shoot around. Several of the goalies were on the second sheet of ice going through drills with Islanders’ goalie consultant Sudarshan Maharaj.

The Sound Tigers staff was all over the rink and town of Moncton to get some of the exciting stories that the players are talking about around the rink.

PRESENTS!: Goalies Peter Mannino, who signed with the Islanders this summer after graduating from the University of Denver, received his new mask. The helmet has both an Islander on one side and a Sound Tiger logo on the other. At the top, stemming from the cat’s eye cage is a lighthouse that has a cartoon caricature of an Islander. At the chin, is his nick-name, “Manno.” On the back are the American and Italian flags crossing and the number 217 for good luck, stanind for his brithday.

Haley fightAnother TWO Bite the dust: Micheal Haley played in his first NHL preseason game last night when the Islander took on the Philadelphia Flyers. Only two minutes into the first period he took on Matthew Clackson in a fight at center ice. Haley seemed to get the best of him as he threw several punches and then landed on top. In the second tilt, Haley fought Steve Downie, one of the scrappier players the Flyers have. Both fights are posted on Sound TigersTV.

Giving Back: Four players that have local ties to the area went to a nearby hospital to meet some of the kids and sign some autographs. Rob Hennigar, who played for the University of New Brunswick, Andrew MacDonald, who played for the local Quebec Major Junior Team the Moncton Wildcats, Bruno Gervais and Joey MacDonald. The players brightened the day of many children with handshakes and high-fives. One little boy had on doctor's gloves and a stethoscope and was taking Joey MacDonald temperature. His diagnosis was "your good and healty enough to play in tomorrow's game. NEXT!"
