Oct 22, 2008
Jason Pitton takes us golfing on Sound TigersTV
Jason Pitton begins this season’s features of Ins and Outs. Each week we will sit down with one player and discuss some of the things they enjoy away from the rink.
What are some of the things that you enjoy doing away from hockey?
Once I get home in the spring-time, I love to go hunting and fishing. Most of the time when I get back it is turkey season so I do a lot of that. This season I was able to out hunt my brother and father, catching two turkeys. Once the spring season ends I then love to get out on the lake and do some fishing. Turkey hunting is in the spring and then in the fall I miss out on the deer and moose hunting because of the hockey season but we had an early goose season, which was around the time of Mini-Camp, and I was able to do some of that. We eat all of the meat when we hunt so we do not kill just for the sport but also for the food.
If you were not playing hockey, what career would you have gone into?
I love the outdoors and its something that I really love doing. I would have to be an angler, hunter or fisherman. An angler is someone who has their own outdoors show on TV. I don’t know if I’d go as far as my own show but just being in the outdoors is what I enjoy doing.
Can you compare hockey to hunting?
The only thing that comes close in comparison is when you’re lined up on a face-off next to a guy and the two of you agree that once that puck drops you’re fighting. It has been agreed upon by both guys that you’re fighting the adrenaline gets going. I get the same feeling when I’m sitting at the base of a tree and the turkey pops out and your preparing to pull the trigger.
If you won the lottery today, what would you do with the money?
I would buy a nice house on Kawarthas Lake and then buy one for my parents. If I still had money left over I’d buy a nice big boat.
If you could meet anybody, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I was able to meet Doug Gilmour, who was my idol growing up as a kid in the Toronto area. I was able to skate with him a few summers ago and even being a 21-year old, I was still in awe just being in his presence.
As a spectator watching hockey, what is your favorite part of the game?
I like the big hits, because it sparks the bench and gets the crowd excited. I also like to see a nice tick-tack-toe goal because they’re all pretty.
Any superstitions you have prior to a game?
I’m pretty normal about that stuff. I just have a routine that I like to follow before a game. I know some guys have to put their gear on in a certain order but with me it’s just put it on and play.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
I cannot stand when the wooden knob piece at the end of my stick is loose. It shakes around and makes the stick weaker so I can’t stand that.
What is your favorite place to eat in the Connecticut area?
The place we usually go for a pre-game meal in the area is called Armellino’s. They have good Italian food there.
Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
My parents
What are other sports do you enjoy other than hockey?
I started to play a lot of baseball in the summer. I played on a men’s league softball team, which was a lot of fun. I like to watch lacrosse as well. My favorite teams are the Toronto clubs, the Blue Jays and the Rock.
What is the biggest perk about playing professional hockey?
You get to come to the rink everyday and put on the skates and play a sport. Once your done you get to go home and enjoy the rest of the day. Besides working out everyday, you get the summer’s off.
What are your bad habits?
I don’t really have any bad habits besides the fact that I have a guitar and I never really play it.
What is your favorite type of movie?
I like comedy movies. I do enjoy a thriller every now and then but comedies have to be my favorite. I liked Step Brothers a lot with Will Ferrell but my all-time favorite has got to be Wedding Crashers.
What is the worst injury you’ve suffered?
My shoulder injury last season was bad. Before the surgery, it would pop out 3-4 times a month.
