ISLANDERS SIMMER CANADIENS
Sep 19, 2007 | By Kimber Auerbach
The New York Islanders came into the Moncton Coliseum listed on the score-board as the home team but if you sat in the stands with the locals, you wouldn’t have known it. judging by the sea of Motreal Canadiens jerseys. However, there was a cheering section of about 50 family members from Jon Sim’s home town of New Glasgow, NS, which is about two hours from Moncton, and Sim did his best to impress leading the Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
Sim put the Islanders in front 1-0, at 7:29 of the first period, when he picked up a loose puck behind the Montreal net and stuffed a wrap-around under Montreal goalie Cristobal Huet. Seven minutes later, Sim deposited his second tally of the night. Islanders’ defensemen Marc-Andre Bergeron raced into the Montreal defensive zone and threw a blind shot on net from the corner. Huet squeezed the post and made the initial save but Sim was waiting on the door step to bury the rebound giving the Islanders the 2-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Islanders’ new team captain Bill Guerin gave the Islanders a three goal cushion. Guerin, who was stationed in the high slot, took a step back to open a passing lane for line-mate Mike Comrie to feed a pass to him. Guerin took the pass and wristed it through Huet to give the Islanders a commanding 3-0 lead going into the second period.
In the middle frame, Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro held the Canadiens scoreless. He faced 10 shots turning them all aside while making a few acrobatic saves with his stick to break up the few scoring chances that Montreal had. DiPietro finished with 19 saves through two periods of play. Entering the third period, Islanders’ head coach Ted Nolan juggled the goalies and put in Wade Dubielewicz to start the third.
The Canadiens broke through in the third when Sergei Kostitsyn snapped a perfect shot off the far post to make the score 3-1. Thomas Beauregard picked up the lone assist on the goal. Exactly half-way through the final period, Dubielewicz made a sprawling save on Kostitsyn throwing his blocker up to turn aside his shot. Dubielewicz finished the period turning away 10 of 11 shots by the Canadiens and clinching the victory for the Islanders 3-1.
