ISLANDERS’ ROOKIES OUT-RACE BLUE EAGLES

Sep 20, 2007   |  By Kimber Auerbach

The New York Islanders rookies did not disappoint in what may turn out as their last official game at the year's training camp, not counting the inter-squad blue vs. white game this Saturday.  Like the veterans last night beating the Montreal Canadiens on the Moncton Coliseum ice, the rookies followed in the veterans foot steps tonight by defeating the Unversity of Moncton, 4-2.  Drew Fata and Sean Bentivoglio each scored late in the third to seal the victory for the Islanders' rookies.

Both teams exchanged scoring chances early in the first period and a few punches as well.  Jason Pitton got into a scrap when he was checked into the boards from behind by U. of Moncton forward Nicolas Robillard.  Pitton slowly picked himself up and went after Robillard.  Robillard received an extra minor for boarding.  Islander rookies' goalie Maxime Ouellet and University of Moncton net-minder Eric Lafrance, held the fort until late in the period.  Local favorite Chris Gaudet, a former Moncton Wildcat from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, did what he had done so well for the Wildcats the past four years, opened the scoring.  Islanders' rookie defenseman, Martin Frechette took a shot from the right point that was blocked, but the rebound caromed to teammate Masi Marjamaki.  Marjamaki sent a cross ice pass to Gaudet who snapped a shot past the U. of Moncton goalie, Lafrance, for the 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Blue Eagles broke through at 4:39 to tie the score at 1-1.  U. of Moncton center, Glenn Robichaud, wristed a soft shot on net that fooled Ouellet.  The Islanders' net-minder made the initial save but the rebound fluttered in front of him and was smacked home by Mathieu Berube.

The Islanders' rookies only needed 18 seconds to grab the lead in the third period when Tomas Marcinko deflected a shot over the shoulder of Lafrance.  Line-mate Sean Bentivoglio sent a pass to a streaking Marcinko who extended his stick in front of the defenseman on his back and made a pretty deflection for the 2-1 lead.  U. of Moncton forward Pierre-Andre Bureau tied the score at 2-2, 5:57 into the final frame, when he lifted a rebound over the shoulder of Ouellet.  Islanders' rookie defenseman Drew Fata, wearing the captain's ‘C' on his jersey, regained the one goal lead when he converted an end-to-end rush cutting across the crease and sliding the puck around Lafrance for the 3-2 lead.

One minute later, Masi Marjamaki sent a long clearing pass off the glass and Bentivoglio out raced the Blue Eagle defensemen to the puck and made a back-hand move on Lafrance to give the Islanders' rookies the 4-2 lead.

“It was a great play by Marj. (Marjamaki) to clear the puck off the glass and out of the zone,” Bentivoglio said.  “I knew that the far defenseman was out on a long shift so I was able to beat him to the puck and move in on the goalie alone.”

Maxime Ouellet would make the two-goal lead hold up as he finished with 22 saves.  The Islanders' rookies out-shot the Blue Eagles 37-24.

Game Operations
The crowd was full of University of Moncton fans cheering on their classmates and when Mathieu Berube banged home the Blue Eagles first goal the fans erupted.

3 Stars

1. Sean Bentivoglio - Finished with a goal and an assist and was by far the fastest player on the ice.

2. Drew Fata - Scored the game winning goal and wore the captain's 'C' well sticking up for the skilled players who were knocked around by many of the biggers junior players.

3. Masi Marjamaki - Had two assists on the Islanders' rookies first and last goals.

Twisted Wristers
Today at the rookies' morning skate, Sound Tigers head coach Jack Capuano put the players in control of their own destinies.  He had a shooter from each line take a shot from one end of the ice to other.  If they scored, they'd skate a shorter sprint instead of having to skate to the far goal-line.  Unfortunately for the players, each line missed.   Capuano then extended the challenge to his assistant coach Bernie Cassell.  Cassell stepped up and buried two shots in the back of the far net.  To rub it in the players' faces, Cassell took his second shot on the back-hand and floated it in.  Cassell described the shot with a laugh as "no big deal'…The Blue Eagles team was made up of mostly 21-25 year old students who played major junior hockey before starting their education at the University of Moncton.
