TRAINING CAMP – DAY 9

Sep 22, 2007   |  By Kimber Auerbach

The 2007 Emmy Awards took place last Sunday but the people of Prince Edward Island had their own red carpet event today.  People from all over the province welcomed the New York Islanders for the team’s Blue and White scrimmage in their new state of the art arena, the Summerside Wellness Center.

The White team jumped on the board first at the half-way mark of the opening period.   University of Maine graduate, Derek Damon received a pass from Miroslav Satan that caught a Blue Team defenseman flat-footed, allowing Damon to streak in on Team Blue goalie Joey MacDonald.  Damon made a quick fake and slid a back-hand shot under MacDonald’s pad for the 1-0 lead.  Team White did not waste much time in taking a 2-0 lead when Sound Tiger graduate Trent Hunter completed a pretty passing play with line-mate Mike Sillinger.  Sillinger received a pass from Sean Bergenheim in the far corner and drew the defenseman covering Hunter in the slot to him, opening a passing lane for Sillinger to slide a pass to the far post where Hunter was to tap in Team White’s second goal of the game.

The second period belonged to Mike Comrie scored two goals to even the score at 2-2.  Comrie put the Blue Team on the board just five minutes into the second period when he received a pass from Bill Guerin springing him on a breakaway against Team White goalie Maxime Ouellet.  Comrie faked a slap shot and then slid a wrist shot through the legs of Ouellet who came in to replace Rick DiPietro who started the game.  Comrie picked up his second tally when Guerin made a pretty move around Team White defenseman Bryan Berard and sent a pass to Comrie who was streaking down the slot.  Comrie did not fake the slap shot this time, instead blasted one over the glove of Ouellet, knotting the score at 2-2 entering the third period.

Sound Tigers’ assistant captain regained the lead for the White Team when he wristed a shot over the glove of Mike Mole who replaced MacDonald half-way through the second period making the score 3-2 in favor of Team White.  Damon picked up an assist on the goal at 3:09.  Comrie would strike again in the third picking up the hat trick when he came in on a breakaway against Ouellet and snapped a shot under the cross-bar tieing the score at 3-3 sending the game into a shootout.  Aaron Johnson had the lone assist on the goal with two minutes remaining.

Shootout
The White Team shot first and selected last season’s shootout specialist Satan who did not disappointed snapping a shot under the blocker of Mole for the early 1-0 lead.  Next up was Gordie Dwyer for the Blue Team who snapped a shot through the legs of Ouellet tieing the shootout at 1-1.  Mole then stopped Sillinger which brought Islanders’ captain Guerin to the line.  Following in Dwyer foot steps, Guerin snuck a shot through the legs of Ouellet which would turn out to as the game-winner for Team Blue.  Mole and Ouellet would both stop the next shooter they faced clinching the overall victory for Team Blue, 5-4.

Twisted Wristers
The game was a sellout with 4,012 local hockey fans from the province of P.E.I. hoping to receive a Rick DiPietro autograph or one of the pucks that newly acquired acquisition Mike Comrie was tossing into the crowd during warm-up…On Comrie’s second goal, you could see Bill Guerin’s jaw drop in awe of the pin-point accuracy that Comrie had on his shot…Immediately following the game, the players got back on their buses and headed for the local airport set to arrive in Long Island at 7:30 p.m. tonight to continue training camp back in New York…Bill Guerin was presented with the “Oyster Cup” by the mayor of P.E.I for Team Blue’s victory in the Blue and White game.

Game Operations
During the first intermission the College of Summerside Performing Arts entertained the crowd with a drum and bag-pipe song at center ice.  In the second intermission, one of the local youth hockey teams tossed t-shirts into the crowd.  Throughout each goal scored, the house lights were turned down and spotlights followed the celebrating players after they scored.  The arena even had projectors above their ice shining blue and orange lights in each of the face-off circles and displaying the Summerside logo in the neutral zone.
