SOUND TIGERS SHUTOUT BRUINS

Bridgeport Sound Tigers 2, Providence Bruins 0

Sep 28, 2007

Bridgeport Sound Tigers’ goalies, Maxime Ouellet and Michael Mole were perfect in the team’s second victory of the preseason, shutting out the Providence Bruins 2-0. In a pre-game decision, Sound Tigers head coach, Jack Capuano, was going to have the two net-minders split the game no matter how well or poorly either were playing.

The Sound Tigers nearly got on the board in the first period, when second year team captain, Mark Wotton snapped a shot over the glove of Bruins’ goalie, Jordan Sigalet but the puck rung off the post. Ouellet started the game for the Sound Tigers and made nine saves in the first period.

After a scoreless second period that saw Ouellet stop seven shots before being replaced by Mole, the Sound Tigers were finally able to grab the lead in the third period.

Trevor Smith, who had a goal in the Sound Tigers' preseason opener on Wednesday, started the scoring. Smith took a pass from line-mate Keith Johnson and leaned into a shot from the slot that eluded Sigalet to give the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead at 5:01 of the final period. Dustin Kohn also assisted on the goal. Johnson doubled the Sound Tigers lead at 12:55 when Jamie Fraser fed him a lead pass that he caught and then slid a shot under the pad of Sigalet to put the Sound Tigers up 2-0. Mole would make the two goal margin hold up making nine saves in the final period for a total of 12 in the game.

“We’re all battling for a spot on this team,” Mole said. “The most important thing that we can do is make the coaches' decision on who to keep a tough one. If we all can do that, this team is going to win a lot of games this season.”

The Sound Tigers travel to Lowell, MA tomorrow to take on the Lowell Devils at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena at 6:05 p.m.

3 Stars:

1. Keith Johnson – Had a hard working hat trick…a goal, an assist and a big blocked shot with under a minute to play to preserve the Sound Tiger goalies’ shutout.

2. Maxime Ouellet – 16 saves

3. Michael Mole – 12 saves

Game Operations: During both the first and second intermissions, young fans had the opportunity to shoot for $100. In the second period, there were two sharp shooters who wristed shots through the four inch hole at the bottom of a ‘shooter-tutor.’ Half of the money was donated to the Greater Bridgeport Junior Hockey Association.

History: For the first time in Sound Tigers’ history, two brothers wore the Bridgeport jersey in the same game. Keith and Gregg Johnson, brothers from Windsor, CT, played together for the Sound Tigers with Keith tallying two points in the 2-0 victory over the Bruins.
