SOUND TIGERS ICED BY PENGUINS

From the get go, the Sound Tigers were on their heals. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' forward Jeff Taffe scored two goals in the first period and one in the second to complete the hat-trick and lead the Penguins to a 6-1 victory.

Sound Tigers' forward Frans Nielsen, took a penalty just 1:08 into the first period giving the Penguins the five-on-four man-advantage. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton' leading scorer, Taffe, wasted no time in claiming the lead for him team when he delayed a shot in the left circle and snapped a wrister over the glove of Sound Tigers' starting goalie, Mike Morrison for the 1-0 lead. Nathan Smith and Tim Brent collected the assists on Taffe's fifth goal of the season at 2:30. With the Sound Tigers attempting to kill off a five-on-three Penguins' power-play with under a minute remaining in the opening frame, Taffe struck again for his sixth goal of the season and second of the game with the assists going to Mark Ardelan and Chris Minard. The goal gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead going into the second period.

Scrum in FrontThe Sound Tigers came out of the tunnel for the middle period with energy and trimmed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lead in half. Drew Fata wristed a shot that was saved by Penguins' net-minder Ty Conklin, but the rebound bounced to the man with the hottest hand for the Sound Tigers, Ben Walter. Walter shoveled a shot on Conklin that was stopped but the puck trickled to Conklin's right, where Tim Jackman was able to slam home the Sound Tigers' first goal of the game, his second of the season, only a minute and 19 seconds into the period. That however was the closest the Sound Tigers would get to tieing the score as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would rattle off three unanswered goals before the period was over. Jonathan Filewich made the score 3-1 at 3:48 when he slid a shot through the legs of Morrison from the left circle. Joe Jensen and Alex Goligoski assisted on Filewich's first goal of the season. Connor James would score his first goal of the season for the Penguins 50 seconds later when he received a pass from Ryan Lannon and tucked a shot in behind Morrison making the score 4-1. Tim Wallace also had an assist on the goal. Taffe completed his hat-trick at 16:08 of the second period when he finished a pretty passing play with Minard for his seventh goal of the season.

In the third period Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would eliminate any hope of a comeback for the Sound Tigers when Filewich scored his second goal of the game, and second on the season. Tim Wallace and Kurtis McLean had the helpers giving the Penguins the 6-1 victory over the Sound Tigers.

Penguins' winning goalie, Conklin, finished with 29 saves on 30 shots and Morrison had 30 saves on 36 shots. The Sound Tigers finished 0-9 on their power-play and 6-8 on the penalty kill.

3 Stars:

1. Jeff Taffe - His two goals in the first period would turn out as all the Penguins would need in their 6-1 win
2. Jonathan Filewich - Leave it to the man who has haunted the Sound Tigers for the past three seasons to score his first and second goals of the season
3. Ty Conklin - Conklin did not stand on his head tonight but turned away most of the Sound Tigers' shots and did not allow many rebounds for the Sound Tigers' forwards to pounce on

Farewell Tour: In what may turnout as his final season, Dennis Bonvie dressed for warm-ups but did not play in the game, much to the chagrin of Section 105. The Penguins will make three more stops to Bridgeport this season and may see ice-time then.

FIRE: Sound Tigers' forward Jeff Tambellini has led the team in shots in all but one game this season. Tonight he had seven shots.

All Jacked Up: The streak is still alive. Tim Jackman has a point in each of the Sound Tigers' games this season with two goals and four assists in five games. Not only did he contribute on the scoreboard but also threw his muscle around in a fight with Deryk Engelland during the first period.

Greenwich Youth HockeyGame Operations: Greenwich Youth Hockey was out in full force tonight playing a mini-game in both intermissions. There were heavy hits and a lot of goals scored but most importantly, smiles as they left the ice.
